SOUTHEND United have been hit by a misconduct charge by the EFL after failing to pay their players on time for December.

Nine members of the Shrimpers squad had to wait an extra fortnight to pick up their wage packets which had been due on New Year's Eve.

And the EFL have now confirmed Blues will be facing disciplinary action.

The EFL statement said: "Southend United has been charged with misconduct for non-payment of wages for failing to pay a number of players on the applicable payment due dates in December 2019.

"Whilst outstanding payments were made in the New Year, the Club has now been referred to a Disciplinary Commission for failing to adhere to the terms of the players’ contracts.

"As this matter is now subject to proceedings, the EFL will be making no further comment at this time."
