SOUTHEND United right-back Elvis Bwomono remains on a high after netting the first goal of his senior career.

The 19-year-old netted Blues’ third goal in their 3-0 win against Southampton under 21s in the Checkatrade Trophy.

And Bwomono was delighted to see the ball hit the back of the net.

“Words just can’t describe that feeling,” said the defender.

“I hadn’t actually scored since playing for the under 16s.

“I scored in some pre-season games but that was my first professional goal and it was great.”

Bwomono collected a neat pass from Stephen McLaughlin before bursting into the box and netting with a low, right footed shot which flew into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

The right-back failed to score in 63 games for Blues’ under 18 side and has played 25 matches for the under 23s without hitting the back of the net.

But Bwomono was particularly pleased to break his duck before team-mate Dru Yearwood.

“I drive in every morning with Dru and Harry Kyprianou and we’re always winding Dru up about how many games he’s had without scoring,” said Bwomono.

“I’ve scored now and Kyps got one too so I cannot wait for our next journey because Dru is going to get ruined!

Bwomono also showed his delight while celebrating the goal.

But the youngster admitted he would normally have opted to pass the ball before shooting.

“Normally I would pass but I just kept driving and had a shot because you never know what might happen,” said Bwomono.

“It was great to see it go in and it was a good performance from us too.

“We have to stay professional whoever we’re playing and we did that.

“It was also great to get a clean sheet and to get through to the next round.”

The Shrimpers’ 3-0 win secured them a second place finish in their group and means they will be drawn away from home in the next round.

The draw takes place at 1pm on Friday afternoon, live on TalkSport2.
