TRIBUTES have been paid to a much-loved Maldon resident, hailed as a “special individual” by the town’s mayor.

Marion Condon, who had lived in Chelmer Terrace since 1995, died on March 3 at the age of 78 following a short battle with ovarian cancer.

She was a well-known figure around the town and involved in community groups such as Maldon Twinning Association, U3A, Maldon Wyke Women’s Institute and the Little Ship Club.

She also served on the board of the Maldon Housing Association.

Marion helped run the WI Country Markets at Maldon Town Hall, a venue where she regularly helped cater at events with her fabulous cooking skills.

She also cooked meals twice a week for the elderly at the WRVS Kitchen and helped out at many charity events, raising thousands of pounds for Macmillan Cancer Support, Helen Rollason Cancer Charity, the Royal British Legion and RNLI.

Maldon mayor Flo Shaughessy said she will be missed very much.

In a letter to Marion’s husband of 58 years, Peter, Mrs Shaughessy said: “I want to convey the sincerest condolences of the town mayor and councillors at this sad time.

“Marion was one those special individuals whose selfless efforts made a lasting impression on the lives of others and who made a significant contribution to improving life in Maldon.

“I feel sure many people in the town will miss her cheery smile and her kindness to everyone.”

Marion is survived by Peter and four children – Louisa, Paul, Andrew and Robert.

She also had 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Her family said: “She brightened up many dark days and was always there for whoever needed her help, whether they be related or not to her. She will be missed but never, ever forgotten and our love for her will stay the same for the rest of time.”

“The response following Marion’s death has been overwhelming and the home she lived in along with Peter is now filled with dozens of cards.

“So many cards have been sent that there’s hardly space for anything else.

"This proves what an impact she had on everyone and her legacy is a great one.”

Marion’s funeral at Chelmsford Crematorium will be held tomorrow for immediate family only.
