TV Licensing data has revealed more than 200 households across Essex are still watching programmes on black and white television sets.

As BBC One celebrates its 50th anniversary of colour TV this week, new data looking into TV habits has been released.

There were 220 black and white TV licences in force at the end of September, down from 231 for the same period in 2018.

In the south east region, Essex ranks second, ahead of Surrey with 163 licences and Sussex with 103.

London has the highest number of households with black and white TV licences in the country with 1,311.

Sophia Lazarides, spokesperson for TV Licensing London & South East, said: “When BBC One launched its colour TV service in November 1969, there were only three channels available.

“Fast forward to 2019, and more than half of TV households have access to hundreds of channels.

“Whilst only accounting for a small proportion, it’s interesting to know some households still like to watch their favourite shows on a black and white telly.”
