A POPULAR community-run charity event will return this year after being revamped due to Covid restrictions.

The annual New Town Open Gardens normally gets residents together to explore the stunning gardens of the area whilst raising money for good causes at the same time.

However, last year's event had to be cancelled due to Covid restrictions.

In 2021, however, organisers have decided to host a socially distanced New Town Front Garden Trail instead.

Jean Quinn, co-organiser, said: "We really did not want to cancel this popular New Town community event for a second year so were delighted when a friend suggested as an alternative, utilising our front gardens which can be viewed from a safe distance."

The trail will consist of a scarecrow festival, front yard sales, live music and a series of front gardens will be open for viewing.

There will be "what I did in lockdown" displays and crafts for sale.

Treats will be available at the ever-popular cake stalls whilst annual favourite, the bring a plant - take a plant table, will return.

One neighbour who knits 3D models which sit on a New Town post box will share her fascination with knitting, offering advice and samples.

Another passionate local historian is not only compiling a local history quiz walk, but also offering for a £1 fee to research who lived at the enquirer’s address in 1911 and 1939.

Fellow organiser Ann Morris said: "I’m looking forward to seeing not only all the scarecrows but also all the weird and wonderful things people created during lockdown.

"We are sure to see lots of crafts however, I know of a neighbour who astonishingly last spring made or renovated eleven tables.”

Programmes, which cost £2, go on sale from 1pm on June 20 at St Stephen's Church, in Canterbury Road.

This year's event is raising money for Medical Assistance Dogs and the Robin Cancer Trust.
