Today’s Nostalgia spread is a celebration of one of Colchester’s finest exports - Britpop icons Blur.

Lead singer Damon Albarn and guitarist Graham Coxon met at Stanway School before going on to form the band at the University of London’s Goldsmiths College in 1988.

Blur went on to enjoy huge success over the course of 30 years and released eight studio albums, six of which hit number one in the UK charts.

In 2009, they made their live comeback after a decade-long hiatus in front of roughly 150 delighted fans at the East Anglian Railway Museum in Wakes Colne.

It was the same venue where they played their first gig.

Blur have been on hiatus again since 2015. However, that hasn’t stopped us dipping into our photo archive and we found these pictures of the night a feature-length documentary about the band was shown at the Odeon cinema in Colchester.

No Distance Left to Run - billed as a portrait of enduring friendship and resolution - included footage from their gig in Chappel and followed Albarn, Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree as they reunited for a series of concerts in 2009.

It contained previously unseen archive material alongside revealing new interviews and reports, recounting Blur’s highs and lows, from Colchester and Goldsmiths College to their headline return at Glastonbury and Hyde Park.

Originally there were no plans to show the film in Colchester.

However, after press coverage in the Gazette and a campaign by local fans, it was shown at the Odeon. It proved a hit, as these pictures show.
