COLCHESTER’S MP has written to the Culture Secretary to call for clarity over when the U’s can welcome fans back to the stands.

Will Quince has contacted Oliver Dowden on behalf of Colchester United chairman Robbie Cowling, explaining the work going on behind the scenes to get the Jobserve Community Stadium ready to reopen to the public once again.

Mr Quince posted the letter on Twitter admitting he was not the biggest football fan, but promising to “fight for the club during these most difficult of times”.

The letter said: “Mr Cowling has emphasised the vital importance of Colchester United Football Club’s fans returning to the stadium to support the team as soon as possible.

“The club has taken extraordinary steps to become Covid-secure and has placed public health and safety at the forefront for when they can reopen their gates.

“Moreover, Mr Cowling has provided me with his personal assurances the health of the public and their fans is the club’s absolute priority, with the club listening to guidance being provided from the Government and implementing all safeguards.

“It has also funded a programme of work which will make attending a game in the stadium as safe as attending any workplace, school or restaurant.

“Mr Cowling has stressed to me the financial damage this pandemic is doing to Colchester United, and the club has used a considerable amount of reserves.”

New research by football’s governing body Fifa estimates the pandemic has cost clubs about £11 billion.

The impact on smaller clubs such as the U’s is huge and only on Wednesday National League club Macclesfield Town were wound up due to unpaid debts of £500,000.

Essex rivals Southend United also owe £493,000 to HM Revenue and Customs.

Mr Quince said getting fans back through the turnstiles was vital to securing clubs like the U’s futures.

He said: “Colchester United have gone to great lengths to ensure their fans can support the club financially and provide it with a boost in morale in this time of need.

“I would, therefore, be grateful if you could provide me with further clarity on when football clubs like Colchester United can reopen their gates to fans in a Covid-secure stadium.”
