COLCHESTER is rightly proud of its military history and events that connect the army and public are always hugely popular.

In a previous nostalgia piece we looked back at the town's former tattoos - once a staple part of the town’s social calendar.

Today we're taking a trip down memory lane by reflecting on the open days which took place every year at the Garrison.

The military were also heavily involved in Colchester's country days, which were held on Abbey Field.

Both attracted bumper crowds and, as the pictures on this spread show, provided a feast of fun for the whole family.

They were massive events, with lots of military enactments and army equipment and vehicles for children to crawl round.

In addition to shows and displays, there were various rides and attractions and visitors had the chance to get involved by taking part in games and challenges.
