Southend's Rendezvous casino will close indefinitely, it was announced today.

The popular casino, at the landmark Kursaal on Southend seafront, has confirmed it will not be re-opening it's doors to punters when Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.

Bosses at Caesars Enterainment, which runs the casino, have said "difficult trading conditions" had forced their hand.

The move now throws serious doubts over the future of the Kursaal itself because of ongoing issues with the old bowling alley.

Essentially, the building will only have a Tesco Extra operating there.

A spokesman said: "Caesars Entertainment UK, owners of Rendezvous Casino regret to announce that the casino will not be re-opening following the recent closure during the Covid-19 pandemic.

"We have reluctantly taken this decision following difficult trading conditions in recent years and the impact that the Covid-19 pandemic will have on future business levels.

"We are grateful to our employees and suppliers who worked hard to deliver a great entertainment venue over the years and thank them following this difficult decision.

"Thank you also to our valued customers for their support of Rendezvous Southend.

"We hope we get the chance to welcome you at one of our other venues."

James Vessey-Miller, the manager of Southend's Railway Hotel, on Clifftown Road, said: "As predicted, yet another tenant of the iconic Kursaal has, unfortunately, ceased trading.

"The Rendezvous Casino has today announced it has permanently closed due to unbearable business pressures due to the COVID19 pandemic.

"This leaves this vulnerable building with only one business left; the Tesco Express.

"Southend Council needs to rapidly develop a plan for this building to ensure its long-term use and survival."
