PSYCHEDELIC rock admirers will have their brains bent and minds warped this weekend when a wavy band performs its freak beats.

Surfquake, comprised of comically-nicknamed musicians, Nelson, The Dune, Carabunga, and Noserider, formed more than nine years ago.

The Colchester-based quartet, which specialises in retro psych nuances, embodies the free-spirited sounds of the Sixties and has released positively received albums of original material.

But the colourfully-clad group is perhaps just as well known for their unique takes on former surf hits and classic television theme tunes.

Everything from Hawaii 5-0’s soundtrack to the vintage sounds of Batman, for example, features in the veteran band’s set.

And tomorrow night they are set to sonically transform the Colchester Arts Centre into a technicoloured kaleidoscope oozing with synths and chiming guitars.

Tracks from their first two albums, Surf and Destroy, and Quake Up, will feature, in addition to their signature renditions.

Nelson, from Surfquake, has said the group is excited to be back in town.

“It is great to be playing Colchester again,” he said.

“Apart from a live session on Loxley’s Actual Radio show in 2019, Surfquake’s last gig here in Colchester was the launch party for our second album, Quake Up.

“We will be playing songs and tunes from that album, plus some favourites rom our debut Surf & Destroy.”

In addition to Surfquake, avant-garde pop-rocker Ed Sykes will open the evening in captivating fashion.

The eccentric musician, backed by his Sonic Oscillators band, has not long released his debut single, Whiplashed, on a seven-inch vinyl.

More impressively, the track boasts contributions from luminaries such as Jon Povery from The Pretty Things, and David Bowie’s former pianist, Mike Garson.

Not one to rest on his laurels, the innovative artist is already working on his first, full-length LP, using old-school methods of recording.

The audience at tomorrow’s show can expect to hear at least a sneak peak of the imaginative concoction of noise he is cooking up.

Surfquake’s standing-only show at the Arts Centre will start at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £8 or £7 for concessions and can be purchased by visiting the venue’s website colchesterartscentre.com.

Alternatively, they can be ordered by calling the box office on 01206 500900.
