A family had a lucky escape from a house fire after their smoke alarm alerted them to the danger.
Fire crews from Chelmsford and Great Baddow were called to the fire in a terrace house Rectory Road, Writtle, at 12.15am yesterday.
When crews arrived they reported the fire was in the first floor bedroom and the first floor of the house was full of smoke. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property and extinguished the fire by 00:40am.
The bedroom has suffered some fire damage and the rest of the floor has suffered slight smoke damage.
An investigation will be carried out to establish the cause of the fire.
The occupants had been alerted to the fire by their working smoke alarm.
