An amber heat health alert for the East of England has been extended as high temperatures continue.

The alert, issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), was originally in place until 5pm on May 27 but has now been extended until 5pm on May 28.

The warning follows multiple days of temperatures above 27°C - an official heatwave as defined by the Met Office.

Monday saw the mercury hit 30°C in some areas, breaking temperature records for May.

The risk score for the alert is 12, indicating a medium likelihood and medium impact to health.

UKHSA has warned of increased risk to vulnerable individuals, including those aged 65 and over or with existing health conditions.

A rise in mortality, increased demand on healthcare services, and overheating in care settings are among the anticipated impacts.

High indoor temperatures could also affect the delivery of care services, with medicines potentially at risk due to heat exposure.

Temperatures in Essex are expected to reach up to 34°C today before a sudden drop.

A cooler change is expected tomorrow, with temperatures forecast to fall to around 22°C or 23°C across the county.
