A major supermarket has confirmed the Essex stores that could close under new plans.

Morrisons has confirmed a list of stores that could close as part of plans to shut around 100 Morrisons Daily sites across the UK.

The supermarket chain previously said the affected convenience stores had been loss-making for some time, many of them acquired through its takeover of McColl’s in 2022.

It added that rising costs linked to government policy, including higher National Insurance contributions and increases to the minimum wage, had made it harder to return some sites to profitability.

The proposed closures follow earlier cost-cutting measures, including the closure of 52 cafés and 17 convenience stores last year, as well as around 200 jobs being put at risk at its Bradford headquarters.

Morrisons said a consultation process will begin, with more staff potentially facing redundancy.

The company has not confirmed how many jobs could be affected overall.

Morrisons has now confirmed that the following stores in Essex are among those that could close:

  • Chelmsford, Melbourne Parade
  • Rochford, West Street
  • Great Baddow, The Vineyards
  • Chadwell St Mary, Defoe Parade
