A wet and windy Easter weekend is on the way.

The Met Office has forecast more unsettled conditions across the UK, with rain and strong winds expected in many areas.

A band of cloud and rain, along with stronger winds, is likely to move in across parts of the north and west on Thursday, followed by low pressure dominating into the weekend.

Essex is expected to escape the worst of the weather, with drier and milder conditions compared to other parts of the country.

In Chelmsford, rain is expected to begin around 4pm on Saturday, lasting through to 1pm on Easter Sunday with mild rain on Good Friday.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Steven Keates said: "As we head into Good Friday and Easter Saturday, the weather is expected to turn more unsettled, with spells of rain at times, some of which could be heavy. This will be followed by sunny spells and showers, with the driest conditions likely towards the southeast of the UK.

"It is also likely to become windy at times across all areas, particularly in exposed north-western locations. While there remains some uncertainty in the detail at this point in time, there is a strong signal for wet and windy conditions to continue into the Easter Weekend."

The week leading up to Easter will see some mild and cloudy days, with highs of 17°C possible in the south, though temperatures are expected to dip slightly by midweek.

Today will see sunny spells and showers, while Tuesday will bring the mildest weather of the week before turning cooler again.

Wednesday will be mostly cloudy with bands of rain moving in from northern Scotland, though these are expected to ease later in the day.

Thursday is expected to start brighter, though with a chance of patchy frost in parts of the north.
