Ben Cutmore admitted he needs to step up to match diving partner Kyle Kothari after the pair finished fourth at the Commonwealth Games.

The Cambridge star finished 21.22 points short of a medal position alongside Kothari in front of a frenzied home crowd at Sandwell Aquatics Centre.

With the pair now bound for the European Championships in Rome, the pair are clear on the challenge ahead.

Kothari said: “We went in knowing we didn’t have the difficulty on our dives.

“We’d have to execute everything perfectly to get a medal, especially with the Canadians and the Australians there.

“There were some slight mishaps but to be honest it was just amazing diving in front of a home crowd and both of us have a good time.”

Cutmore added: “We’ve got to add some difficulty so next time we’ve got a bit of a buffer. Kyle can already do them all so next season’s my time to build on my list.

“I can hopefully improve on my dives and make some bigger ones so I can increase the difficulty, so we won’t have to execute everything so perfectly and still miss out.”

This summer, Team England, supported by funding raised by National Lottery players, comprises of over 400 athletes, all vying for medal success.

Cutmore and Kothari have only been diving together since the spring and were plunged into a Commonwealth debut.

Gold on the night was won by their English team-mates Matty Lee and Noah Williams, with whom they train every day at London Aquatics Centre.

Cutmore said; “We get to see them in action every single day. They're always spectacular to watch and they very, very rarely make any mistakes.

“It's very inspirational. It's something to aspire to be like and to try and grow to be like.”
