JACK Wood is relishing a step up in standard at Southend United.

The 19-year-old midfielder has signed for the Shrimpers from Southern League Premier South side Kings Langley.

And Wood is excited by the opportunity.

"I’m really pleased to have signed," said Wood.

"Two leagues above is a big step up for me but I’m really looking forward to training and getting to know all of the lads.

"Every single time I play I always work hard and try my best and I’m honoured that I’ve been scouted and now signed for such a big club.

"When I first walked into the training ground I had to take a moment to let it all sink in to be honest, but now I’m here I just want to knuckle down and get into the starting 11.

"It’s completely different to where I’ve come from, but I’ll get used to it and I’m really looking forward to kicking on now."

Wood has played 31 times for Kings Langley this season and will now be looking to bring that good form to Blues.

"I’m very direct, quite pacy, skilful and I like to shoot, get assists and work hard,” said Wood.

“I’ve got to show that in training. Hopefully I will and the manager will see that.

"The lads have really welcomed me in and made me feel like a member of the team and I’m looking forward to working hard and improving myself at a great club.”
