SOUTHEND United defender Nathan Ralph insists he has never felt so positive about the Shrimpers.

Blues head to Dover Athletic tomorrow unbeaten in their last five National League games.

And Ralph, who joined the club back in 2019, is keen to continue the feel-good factor.

“This is the most positive it’s been since I’ve been here and I feel we’ve turned a slight corner,” said Ralph.

“The mentality around the place feels more positive too.

“We’ve recruited well and the boys are all together. But nothing gives you better morale than a few wins and we’ve had them now.

“It’s the first time we’ve had that since I’ve been here and you do notice the difference but we have to continue this.”

Blues’ good run has taken them up to 18th in the table, 10 points above the relegation zone.

And Ralph is keen to start catching more sides.

“We want to start looking at the teams above us now,” said the defender.

“Mentality wise there’s an improvement and we can build on that.

“I don’t know the last time we scored a late winner until Dalbs’ (Sam Dalby)one the other night so it does feel like things are turning.

“I’m enjoying the way we’re playing too but we have to keep on going.”

The recent form is in stark contrast to the tough times Ralph has experienced at Roots Hall.

The 28-year-old suffered back to back relegations in his first two seasons and Saturday’s trip to Dover will also bring back memories of another painful afternoon.

The Shrimpers, who were then in League One, were knocked out of the first round of the FA Cup at Dover back in 2019.

And Ralph feels that shows nothing should be taken for granted, despite the Kent club being bottom of the table.

“That was a day to forget,” said Ralph.

“But you can’t underestimate Dover and it’s always a difficult place to go.”

Ralph is in line to make his 50th appearance for the Shrimpers this weekend and has enjoyed captaining the team in his last two outings.

“It’s an honour to wear the armband,” said Ralph.

“I concentrate on my own game but I’ll always help other players when I can.

“I’m trying to do right thing and lead by example.”

Ralph captained Blues in Tuesday night’s 1-1 at Aldershot Town but is now seeking a return to winning ways.

“The last few games we’re unbeaten and, after a point on Tuesday, it would be good to get three points on Saturday,” said Ralph.

“Dover aren’t to be underestimated, they won in the week and we will have to bring our A game.”
