FAMILIES have planted trees and shrubs in a cemetery as a living tribute to their loved ones who have died.

A number of families gathered at Maldon Cemetery to plant tributes to their loved ones and encourage wildlife in the Woodland Glade in Maldon District Council’s annual Day of Dedication on Saturday, December 4.

The area’s natural approach means it is a living place, so as the seasons change the woodlands change in character.

The cemetery team, Friends of Maldon Cemetery and volunteers have been working on initiatives over the past year to recognise and encourage wildlife in this area.

This year the team became Hog Heroes to protect habitats for hedgehogs.

Carlie Mayes, district councillor and chairman of the Friends of Maldon Cemetery, said: “I am delighted that so many families joined us for what is always a very moving and poignant occasion.

"I am grateful not only to our cemetery team, but also the dedicated volunteers and Friends of Maldon Cemetery, who work tirelessly to provide a beautiful place where visitors can take the time to sit with their own thoughts and appreciate the surroundings in this tranquil place."
