A TIRELESS volunteer has received royal recognition for his work after receiving a national award.

Alan Brunning, a South Woodham Ferrers sailing volunteer, has been presented with a prestigious national award by Princess Anne in recognition of his "exceptional generosity and commitment".

The Eyott Sailing Club member received a Lifetime Commitment Award at the Royal Yachting Association’s (RYA) annual awards.

Alan has been on the club's committee for more than 27 years in many different capacities.

This includes the role of commodore where he worked "tirelessly" for two years to ensure the club’s long-term future.

Alan said: "It was a complete surprise to learn that I was to be honoured with a RYA Community Award, and I would like to share this award with all at Eyott who work so hard to support the club and its members.

"I learnt to sail at Eyott here in South Woodham Ferrers, and was unaware that I had been nominated by the sailing club for my work at the club on both the committee and helping to maintain the clubhouse and grounds.

"It was an honour and privilege to be presented with this award by the RYA President, the Princess Royal."

Alan, who went with his wife to the ceremony, added: "It was a day we will both remember for a long time."
