With Halloween this weekend you might be looking for a scary movie or show to enjoy.

And Essex has plenty of connections - be it films shot here or locations inspiring a number of famous tales.

Here we look at some of the best picks for horror films and TV shows with connections to our county.

The Third Day

The psychological thriller, which aired on Sky, was filmed in the Maldon district.

It stars The Talented Mr Ripley's Jude Law, Skyfall's Naomi Harris, Chernobyl's Emily Watson and Katherine Waterston and Paddy Constantine.

The show was partly filmed on Osea Island.

Osea Island said around 200 cast and crew were working on the island for four weeks as part of the production.

The Third Day is a six-part thriller directed by BAFTA award-winner Marc Munden and is set on a mysterious island off the coast of Britain.

Jude Law stars as Sam, who is thrown into the unusual world of the island’s secretive inhabitants. Isolated from the mainland, the rituals of the island begin to overwhelm him, and he is confronted by a trauma from his past.

The Banishing

Borley Rectory became known as the "the most haunted house in England" after being given the description by psychic researcher Harry Price when he published two books about it in the 1940s.

The story of the rectory has been made into film The Banishing and was directed by Christopher Smith. It stars Jessica Brown Findlay, of Downton Abbey Fame, and Billericay born John Heffernan who has appeared in The Crown and Luther.

Brown Findlay plays a mother, who risks losing her only child to a pervasive evil that lurks in distorted mirror reflections, which act as portals between the mortal and supernatural realms.

The Woman in Black

The supernatural horror film starring Daniel Radcliffe is an adaptation of Susan Hill's 1983 novel of the same name.

It was filmed on Osea Island and locations in and around Maldon prior to its release in 2012.

The spine-tingling horror sees a group of children evacuated from war torn London to Eel Marsh House and awakening its darkest inhabitant.

The Reckoning

Hedingham Castle was the filming location for part of The Reckoning.

The story, which is set during the medieval period in England, follows a priest who takes up with a traveling band of actors, who then discover a murder has occurred and try to solve it by recreating the crime in a play.

The 2002 film stars Paul Bettany, Willem Dafoe and Tom Hardy.
