FIRE crews are still on the scene of a haystack fire after being forced to spend anther night fighting the blaze.

Firefighters were called to a fire at an agricultural building in Hall Road, Asheldham on Wednesday, June 23 at around 2.30am.

Teams confirmed the building's animal feed was on fire, with later reports saying around 600 tonnes of haystacks were on fire.

Firefighters were forced to remain on the scene throughout the night and continued to fight the flames throughout Thursday, June 24.

Fire crews from across the area, including Maldon, Burnham, Tillingham and South Woodham Ferrers and more from Rochford and south Essex have been operating in shifts.

The fire is so intense that firefighters were again forced to work through the night to keep the fire under control.

Now the most recent reports suggest the operation is being scaled back as progress is being made.

An Essex County Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "Four crews remained at the scene overnight and, due to the steady progress being made, that has been scaled down to three crews this morning.

"Due to wind, there is a lot of smoke being blown around at the barn fire in Asheldham.

"If you live in the area, please keep your windows and doors shut."
