BRADFORD has gone through a number of changes already in the first 20 years of the 21st century, with new developments opening and a number of achievements for its sports teams.

Here is a look back at some of the city's milestones since 2000.

2001 - Saltaire becomes World Heritage Site

The village was handed its UNESCO world heritage site status in 2001 and has become a popular tourist attraction with the likes of Salts Mill, delving into its industrial past, Roberts Park and has even regularly bene a beacon for filming for TV shows and movies, including The English Game on Netflix last year.

2002 - Bulls world champs

Bradford Bulls defeated Australian NRL Champions Newcastle Knights 41-26 to be crowned World Club Challenge winners on February 1, 2002. Bulls' victory featured a Robbie Paul double and two tries from Michael Withers.

Brian Noble's side were on top of the world after winning the showpiece clash at Huddersfield in what was a trophy-laden period for the then Odsal-based club.

2007 - Born in Bradford begins

The Born in Bradford study, based at Bradford Royal Infirmary, saw 12,500 pregnant women from the district recruited to the study between March 2007 and December 2010.

The progress of the babies will also continue for the project until they reach 21.

2009 - City of Film

Bradford beat off stiff competition from Los Angeles, Cannes and Venice to be named the world's first UNESCO City of Film on June 8, 2009.

This permanent title gives the city international recognition as a world centre for film because of the city’s rich film heritage and its inspirational movie locations.

2012 - City Park opens

The city centre facility built around a unique water feature was nine years in the making before it opened in March 2012.

Architect Will Alsop unveiled his masterplan for the district in 2003. And it nearly never happened at all when a funding bid failed in 2007.

But Bradford city centre was transformed by the development, which features the Mirror Pool, and has been used to host a number of events including a televised Bollywood-style drama.

2013 - City in League Cup Final

After beating the likes of Aston Villa and Arsenal along the way, fourth tier Bradford City shocked the footballing world and reached the Capital One Cup final.

However, the showpiece proved one game too far as Premier League Swansea City thrashed Phil Parkinson's side 5-0 at Wembley.

But, despite the result, City fans enjoyed their day out at the home of English football.

2015 - Broadway opens

Thousands flocked to Bradford city centre as the £260million Broadway shopping centre opened its doors on November 5, 2015.

Singer Alexandra Burke was special guest as the indoor centre finally welcomed shoppers.

It was a day some thought would never come, after the site was left empty for many years.

2016 - Sunbridgewells opens

The £1.9m underground shopping complex opened its doors in December 2016.

The complex, off Centenary Square, was built underneath Sunbridge Road, Upper Millergate and Ivegate.

Developers revealed the cost of the project had risen by £1m to £1.9m after the space increased from 12,000 sq ft to 24,000 sq ft.

Its first phase featured 14 shops, selling items including sweets, coffee, T-shirts and ladies fashion.

It was officially opened by Prince Anne in June 2017.

Val Summerscales, secretary of Bradford Chamber of Trade, said when it opened: “It is such a unique project for the city centre. Everybody has been waiting for it to happen."
