WERE it not for coronavirus, the community would have been taking part in the 91st Witham Carnival this weekend.

The popular event was due to take place today (Saturday, July 11) but like so many events over the past few months, it has been cancelled because of the pandemic.

Organisers made the decision to pull the plug on this year’s carnival back in April and have not made any plans to reschedule.

They will instead be gearing up for next year’s festival in the hope it can go ahead.

Speaking about the cancellation of the carnival earlier this year, organiser Suzanne Goody said: “This has been an upsetting decision to make but following the Government’s announcements, we believe we have no other option – your health and safety is extremely important to the committee.

“We also acknowledge that sponsors may find the next few months a difficult time and local groups may not have the preparation time due to social distancing. It will therefore be challenging to put on a successful carnival.

“Thank you for your understanding and we look forward to seeing you for carnival 2021.”

So while there may not be a carnival this year, the Times is taking readers back to festivals in years gone by.

The photos are a perfect reminder of what a brilliant event the Witham Carnival is and how it brings the town together.

We can only hope the smiles seen on everyone’s faces will be seen again next year.
