A DRIVER is "lucky to be alive" after smashing through an advertising board last night.

They were freed from the wreckage, near Stanningley, Pudsey, by firefighters.

Ambulance crews were scrambled to the scene to help the fire service with the delicate operation in Stanningley Road.

A fire service spokesperson said: "Road traffic collision involving one car trapped under an advertising board. One male casualty extricated by Fire Service personnel and placed in the care of ambulance crews.

"Appliances from Stanningley and Leeds attended."

Sergeant Chris Cahill, who covers the Leeds West area, said: "Driver of this car is very lucky to be alive at STANNINGLEY. Two PCs and other public in the right place and time to assist."

He thanked West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and the Yorkshire Ambulance Service and said the driver was "safe in hospital".
