SOUTHEND United chairman Ron Martin has opted to place the entire Shrimpers squad on furlough.

Martin put six of the highest earning players on furlough when the season was first suspended due to the coronarvirus pandemic.

But, with the campaign now officially ended, Martin has put all players on the Government scheme.

"The EFL have no idea when Leagues One and Two restart," said Martin.

"Testing cannot be afforded and taking players off furlough and playing behind closed doors is not viable when carrying over £200,000 per month for another three, four, five or six months, without any income.

"Until the EFL can provide clarity the club has to furlough the rest of the squad but that can be reversed at upon two days notice should the EFL provide clarity as to the future."
