THE mayor of Chelmsford David Lee has stood down from his duties following news of a police investigation into his activities.
Chelmsford Council confirmed that David Lee has stood down as Chelmsford's mayor, after it was revealed he is being investigated by police.
But a council spokesperson said Mr Lee, ward member for Moulsham and Central Chelmsford, had not handed in his resignation as councillor.
She added: "The Borough Council is aware of a police investigation into Mr Lee's activities and will cooperate fully with their enquiries.
"In addition, the council will follow its legal duties including the duty of care to Mr Lee during the investigation.
"The council is deeply saddened by the news and now is the time to allow the Police to carry out their duties without speculation."
The Conservative group of Chelmsford Council has suspended Mr Lee as a member of their group, pending the outcome of the police investigation.
