JASON Hallett is eager to maintain the same clinical edge he showed at Witham Town as Canvey Island aim to break into the Isthmian North play-off places.

Hallett, who is enjoying his fourth spell with the Gulls after joining from Isthmian Premier League outfit Cheshunt in August, scored a hat-trick as Canvey notched a convincing 7-1 win over Witham in midweek.

The mauling allowed Mark Bentley’s side to move to within three points of the division’s top five and Hallett always felt a goal-laden outing was on the horizon.

“I was very happy to take home the matchball,” said Hallett, who has taken his personal tally to 19 goals in all competitions since returning to Park Lane.

“It’s always nice to contribute with goals but I’m happy as long as we’re winning.

“I felt it had been coming as I should have had a hat-trick a few weeks ago at Soham Town Rangers.

“In all honesty, I think we are capable of getting into the play-offs if we can be a little more consistent.

“If we can also improve our home form then we have got every chance.

“The fans’ support has been fantastic all year, so they deserve it.

“We have all got to stick together and we can give it a right go.”

Hallett was joined on the scoresheet by debutant Ernest Okoh - who joined following his departure from neighbours Basildon United last week - Tobi Joseph, James White and Ryan Melaugh as Canvey put Witham to the sword.

Six of the Gulls’ goals came after the interval, with Scott Kemp’s leveller less than 60 seconds after Hallett had broken the deadlock kicking Canvey into life.

And Hallett, 33, feels Canvey must replicate their second half performance if they want to enjoy success during boss Bentley’s first full season in charge.

“I thought the boys were fantastic,” added Hallett.

“It was a really gritty performance on what was a terrible pitch.

“We all worked hard for each other and, even at 1-1 at half-time, I felt we were always going to kick on and win.

“It’s going to be very important that we keep being clinical at both ends of the pitch in the months going forward if we are to try and push forward in the league.”

And Hallett insists he is enjoying life in familiar surroundings.

“This is my fourth time back at the club,” admitted Hallett.

“I’ve really enjoyed it what with the good FA Cup run we had.

“It’s always nice coming back and seeing some familiar faces.”
