PLANS have been unveiled to demolish a prominent town centre building in Jedburgh.

The four-storey C-listed building, which sits on the corner of High Street and Exchange Street, is currently propped up by scaffolding.

Following extensive surveys of the Baronial-style building, engineers believe it is beyond repairs.

Scottish Borders Council is now seeking planning permission to demolish the C-listed property.

A spokesman for the local authority said: "A number of options have been explored to secure a future for the building, including potential grant aid for repairs but the condition of the building is such that the only economically viable option is to demolish the building and redevelop the site."

Council bosses admit that demolition of the building, which was built in 1866, will leave a gap site in a prominent position within the conservation area.

And that a similar demolition at nearby 29-31 High Street in 2009 is only now being redeveloped.

The corner building houses two ground-floor retail units as well as an apartment on the three upper floors.

The application for demolition will be considered over the coming weeks.
