A GROUP of die-hard Colchester United supporters are collecting cash to help supporters raise the roof for the U’s final promotion push.

Fan group, BlueWhiteArmy (BWA), have issued a rallying cry in a bid to help them create an eye-catching display at the Jobserve Community Stadium on Saturday.

Flags and banners will be provided to fans and members want to see streamers, confetti and balloons decorating the ground when the play-off chasing U’s kick-off against MK Dons at 3pm.

Finlay Mitchell, 19, who has followed the club since he was six years old, set up the fundraising page which so far has more than £100 in donations.

He said: “The BWA has been going for about 12 years. I am one of the youngest members.

“Once a year we get together and think of ideas and make our own flags and banners.

“In previous years everything has all been funded ourselves. A couple of the older members have spent thousands of pounds doing it.

“We thought we might as well ask for a little bit of money to improve things.

“We want the displays to help boost the atmosphere over the final two games of the season.”

The BWA want as many supporters as possible to rip paper, magazines and newspapers into bags so that it can be used as confetti on the day.

The group is also chasing volunteers and hopes to raise enough cash to unveil a big surfer banner to cover one section of the stadium.

Colchester United sit eighth in the Sky Bet League Two table, two points outside of the final play-off place. Following the visit of MK Dons the club face a tricky trip to league winners Lincoln City.

And Finlay says fans are confident they can make a real difference, and if the BWA can boost the ground’s atmosphere then the future looks bright for the U’s.

He said: “We have to be positive, there is no point going in to the games thinking we are not going to win.

“The morale of the players is not great at the moment, but we can help change that. We hope this will encourage more people to get involved.

“There are a lot of houses being built in Colchester, especially near the stadium. Hopefully by improving the atmosphere, maybe a price drop in tickets and some community days we can get a lot of new fans through the gates.”

BWA members are meeting at the Dog and Pheasant pub at 2pm on Saturday for a march to the stadium.
