NON-LEAGUE football fans are clubbing together in a bid to raise enough cash to send a 'superfan' to a match unlike many others.

A fundraising page has been set up in a bid to collect £500 so Witham Town's superfan James Beardwell can enjoy a game at Guernsey FC next season.

And the star of Channel 4’s Undateables says he wants to use the 500-mile round journey to show others with autism that it is possible to travel by themselves.

The campaign to send James to the channel island for a match at the home of The Gurners was started by fellow football fan Chris Daines.

Mr Daines, from Maldon, said: "I know James and follow him on Twitter and saw that he had been posting about wanting to get to a match on Guernsey.

"I'm a Heybridge Swifts fan but James is great lad and his passion for the game and Witham Town is amazing and he does so much for non-league football and football at our level.

"This just seems like a good way of saying thank you to him and showing other autistic people that travelling alone isn't something to be afraid off."

Guernsey FC was founded in 2011 and became the first club from the Channel Islands to compete with mainland teams.

They play at the same level as Witham Town but the two are in separate regional leagues meaning they don't play each other.

That means James will be going to see Guernsey take on another opponent but he was said he was still thinking about wearing the shirt of his beloved Witham Town to the match.

He said: "I'm really looking forward to the trip to Guernsey as a neutral fan, I'm going to be going for a couple of days.

"It’s not just all about the football, it's about showing fellow autistic people that you can travel by yourself and that you don't need to be nervous about it.

"I remember when I was younger that my autism meant I would get nervous but I want to show others that there is no need.

"I just want to say a big thank you to Chris and to everyone who has given some money."

So far cash has been donated by the managers of Witham Town and Bowers and Pitsea while a £30 donation has been made by an anonymous donor from America.

The cash will be used for flights, accommodation and match ticket while Maldon firm Banyards Taxis have agreed to take James to and from the airport.

The total so far is just over £300.
