A BRAVE teenager battling cancer was given a boost thanks to a bedroom revamp organised by Southend’s Gold Geese charity.

Megan Harper, 13, of Martock Avenue, Westcliff, has a rare and untreatable tumour in her palette and secondary cancer in her lungs.

Impressive - Chloe Spillett, of Chloe Gets Creative, was enlisted by Gold Geese to transform the teenager’s bedroom

Rochford interior designer, Chloe Spillett, of Chloe Gets Creative, was enlisted by Gold Geese to transform the teenager’s bedroom.

Chloe said: “I was contacted by Katie Southgate, founder of Gold Geese charity who told me about Megan and her condition and asked if I’d be prepared to design a scheme for her.

“Of course I was honoured to and so we got the ball rolling right away.”

Megan went to stay with her uncle for a few days and knew nothing about the surprise in store for her.

Mum-of-two Chloe explained: “Megan had outgrown her existing bedroom, so I wanted to create her a space where she could feel like young lady. This transition can always prove tricky – as parents we don’t want our children to reach adulthood too quickly.

“The wallpaper was stripped and the whole room painted a lovely fresh white and blank canvas by the wonderful team at Wall 2 Wall decors.

“I tried to maintain a sense of childhood by featuring some fun and bold colour blocking and unicorn accessories - Megan is a big fan of the unicorn trend.

“Once painted, local legends Jamie Jeavons of JINC Projects and Alun Williams of AW Floorings stepped in to get in the fixtures, fittings and plush new carpet down which was kindly donated by Daniel James flooring.

“Megan has been kitted out with a new desk and chair, a new door and gorgeous furnishings including stunning garlands kindly gifted by Velveteen Babies and Magpie & Pickle, and some swish new yellow hairpin legs for her existing storage unit gifted by the wonderful team at The Hairpin Leg Company.”

The transformation, thanks to the team of local tradesmen, took four days – and with an outpouring of donations from local tradesmen and businesses, the bedroom makeover cost just £630.

Chloe added: “It was our very own DIY SOS project and I felt so proud to be a part of it.

“Megan was absolutely thrilled. She was gobsmacked when she first walked into her room and although it’s a cliché she really was lost for words for a few moments.

“I hope and pray that her new hang out brings her joy positivity and most of all, hope for a bright future.”

Gold Geese is a small group of local mums who aim to provide support and gifts to children fighting cancer and their families, in the Southend area.
