A MAN has been jailed after crashing his moped into another rider and causing catastrophic injuries which meant she lost her leg.

Four other men have avoided prison for helping Boom escape the scene in minutes and getting rid of his moped, which has never been recovered.

Basildon Crown Court heard 24-year-old Billy Boom was “showing off” to spectators at an illegal bike meet in the Manorway, Corringham, on the evening of June 14, 2017.

Due to the height of his front wheel while performing the trick, he was unable to see fellow-rider Bethany Bright in front of him and he crashed his Yamaha Tmax moped into her and her green Kawasaki.

Beth, who was 20 at the time, suffered horrific injuries to her left leg and her wrist as well as spinal fractures and a collapsed lung.

In the moments after, Daniel Trott, Michael Holmes, Nicholas Morris and Sonny Waites began to clear up the scene.

Prosecutor Christopher Paxton QC said: “As soon as [Beth] was struck, it was clear there had been a significant incident.

“Within moments of the impact with her, Boom is surrounded by a number of people. A van turns up belonging to Holmes and Morris admits being the passenger.

“Boom gets on the back of someone’s quad bike and is driven away from the scene.”

The four remaining men proceed to load his moped into the back of Holmes’ van and is also removed from the scene.”

None of the men went to assist Beth or even checked how injured she was.

Mr Paxton added: “Trott described the scene as manic and said all he could hear was Beth screaming.”

Boom initially fled the country and went to Spain but returned and was arrested. He admitted a string of motoring offences including causing serious injury by dangerous driving. The other four men initially denied the offence of assisting an offender, despite being caught on CCTV, but changed their pleas on the day of trial.

In a letter read to the court, Boom said he was “truly sorry” for what he had done and wished he had never gone. Sentencing the gang on Friday, judge Ian Graham described the crash as a “terrible incident” which left Beth with “catastrophic injuries”.

He added: “This is a very serious sentence which can only be dealt with by a substantial prison sentence but nothing like the affect it has had on Beth.”

Boom was handed three years in prison and was disqualified from driving for four years.

Morris, 23, of Kings Park, Canvey, Holmes, 27, of Penrith Road, Romford, Trott, 26, of Lambs Lane South, Rainham, and Waites, 19, of Upminster Road North, Rainham were all handed an eight-month prison sentence suspended for 18 months and must complete 120 hours of unpaid work.
