New parking spaces could be the answer to commuters’ prayers if they get the green light.

Last year Greater Anglia applied to Colchester Council to demolish old railway units at Marks Tey Station car park and create 195 new spaces.

Planning officers have now recommended the bid is approved.

If it is given the go ahead it is expected to be a welcome relief to commuters struggling to find a space at the busy station.

Marks Tey station car park has 257 spaces, but demand exceeds supply and commuters face a daily struggle to find a place.

It has even seen some parking at nearby St Michael’s Church in Marks Tey because there is no room at the station.

The report, which will go before councillors on Thursday, said: “On site it is clear the existing parking spaces are in high demand and there is also pressure on the on-street parking spaces.

“The details submitted regarding future demand are considered to represent an adequate justification for the provision of the extra 195 spaces.”

The application saw 14 people object along with the parish council.

A statement from Marks Tey Parish Council said: “The council would request the application is refused due to exasperating the existing highway restrictions, the impact on already poor air quality and additional disabled parking with no provisions for additional disabled access due to the narrow footpath over the bridge.

“The proposal needs to be considered with the wider strategic plan for parking at Marks Tey Station.”

Others branded the car park an eyesore and said it would not help traffic issues in Marks Tey.

One comment said: “The traffic and parking around the station is already chaotic and more cars would exacerbate this situation and cause more hold up and frustration and danger.”

But planning officers have recommended it should be approved subject to 18 conditions.

Colchester councillors will have the final say.
