Common sense prevailed when Maldon District Council threw out the North Heybridge Garden Suburb plans.
The development had been the centre of much debate for a long time, with the most crucial issue being its lack of a flood alleviation scheme.
Sitting in the council chamber in Princes Road, it was clear there was an uneasy feeling among the councillors, and the public when they realised Essex County Council had not established a definitive plan of how to deal with the risk of flooding on the site.
It may be right more than 1,000 homes could be crucial to the future of Maldon, However, our councillors must be confident it is right for the community. With this in mind, the council should be applauded for its decision.
