Vandals have caused serious damage to steps in a village park.

Heybridge Parish Council has warned the community about the main steps leading to the King George V Playing Field in Colchester Road and the closure of the main gates.

In a statement, released today (Wednesday 6 March), a spokesman said: "Sadly due to vandalism to the main steps on to King Georges V Field, the main gates have had to be closed for Health and Safety.

"Therefore there will be no access onto or off of the field using the steps.

"Council are working hard to repair the steps asap and apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Speaking about the vandalism, Heybridge West Cllr. Miriam Lewis explained that anti-social incidents happen in all communities, and that Heybridge is no exception.

Miss Lewis also stated that the Parish Council had allocated money within their budget to upgrade the entrance to the playing field. Some of that budget will now, however, will be used to repair the damage caused by the vandals.

She said: ''Estimates are in the process of being sought for a permanent repair, but however much it costs, it is money that could be spent on providing something more positive for the community. A more hidden but important cost is one of demoralising Parish Council members and staff who work hard to maintain and promote our community. Frankly, it is sickening.’’
