A JEWISH society will be created at Essex University, no matter what outcome of a students union vote.

The university's vice-chancellor, Professor Anthony Forster revealed the news in a statement issued this morning.

It came after a row broke out about antisemitism when a vote was held for a Jewish Society.

The union will relaunch a vote on whether to set up a Jewish Society.

Essex University’s Students’ Union says a new poll was due to go live today after the previous round of voting was deemed “void” due to non-members participating.

The previous vote, which started on February 12, saw more than 200 votes cast against the new society.

The Union of Jewish Students was quick to condemn the number of people voting against the society.

Prof Anthony Forster said: “To see the University of Essex associated with antisemitism has been a deeply shocking event and one which has filled me with great sadness.

“Antisemitism is antithetical to the values of the University of Essex and has no place at our University.

"We have a zero tolerance approach to harassment and hate crime which is at the very core of our values and beliefs. We are proud to subscribe to the working definition of antisemitism produced by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA).

“Recent events have shown me we still have work to do, and I am announcing a series of immediate actions to tackle all forms of antisemitism within our community.”

Prof Forster also said a number of actions would be taken.

These include a commitment to create a Jewish Society irrespective of the student union vote and a review into what happened.

The university will also hold a public event next Thursday, February 28 at 1pm, in support of our Jewish community.

An investigation was launched by Essex University’s Students’ Union yesterday following growing concerns about anti-Semitism.

A spokesman for the union confirmed a new vote would take place after they were made aware of “irregularities” in the previous poll.

He said: “This irregularity has now been resolved, and we will open a fresh vote on the ratification of Jewish Society which will run for three working days. Only members of the Societies Guild will be eligible to vote.”

Those seeking to set up a new society at the university must have their proposal ratified by way of a Student Unions’ vote.

Groups which have recently been approved include Pokemon Go and a K-Pop societies.

The union added it took all reports of anti-Semitic behaviour “extremely seriously”.
