A LIFELINE service providing a safe haven for victims of domestic violence is set to continue its work, thanks to a £500,000 cash injection.

The South Essex Domestic Abuse Hub (Sedah) launched in 2017 and includes centres in Rochford, Castle Point, and Thurrock.

The money will help continue to fund 28 crucial spaces at refuges and a co-ordinator.

The boost will mean another case worker can be hired as one of two members of staff.

The service also provides a drop in-centre in Rochford and Basildon.

Rochford councillor Mike Webb, said: “The South Essex Domestic Abuse Hub operates as a one-stop-shop to some of the most vulnerable residents in our communities, preventing the need for repeat signposting to other services.

“This partnership approach can make the whole process much simpler at a time of real crisis in their lives, ensuring that we offer the best support and advice possible.

“It is important to remember that domestic abuse comes in a whole variety of guises, including emotional, financial and physical, and there are many complicated factors which may need to be addressed.

“One of the most concerning is the impact on children; with this service helping 208 youngsters in the first eight months since it was launched.

“This funding will help us continue to support both vulnerable children and adults affected by domestic abuse in the home.”

The centre has helped major changes in the lives of residents.

In total Sedah dealt with176 referrals from individuals and families between its launch in August 2017 and 31 March 2018.

Among them were six men and seven people aged over 65.

The centre helps supports a whole variety of people.

Sedah also runs in partnership with Changing Pathways, whose teams provide outreach support, refuge services, counselling and other therapeutic services.

The funding will also support the “crash pad” service available for short term stays to meet urgent safety needs.

These facilities are used when someone has to get away from violence and needs somewhere to go.
