A couple from Chelmsford have raised more than £20,000 in nine days after setting up a fundraising page to help one of them get specialist cancer treatment.

35-year-old Paul Phillips-Brame went to doctor after experiencing shortness of breath so he went the doctors.

Paul and wife Niah were shocked when in March 2017 he was diagnosed with cancer.

24 hours later he was preparing for emergency surgery after learning he had cancer in his liver.

Niah, 26, said: "At this point, Paul did not have a clue what the doctors were trying to say and was in utter disbelief.”

“We left the hospital, numb and not knowing what to do or where to go.

"Instantly you feel like you are dragging a great Grandfather clock behind you.

"We went to our local pub at two in the afternoon, cried together and Paul asked me to Marry him.

"I of course, undoubtedly said yes!

After spending most of June in hospital, the couple learned in July that Paul would need chemotherapy again.

So, whilst he was still able to, the couple got married on September 10 2017.

Three days later, Paul recommenced his chemotherapy.

But only managed to have one round of treatment as his health was declining.

Niah added: “He has not been able to have his second treatment due to poor health and bloods.

"He is no longer recovering like he had before and his body and mind has been taken over.”

“There is nothing left for us within the NHS. Paul needs more specific and specialised treatment.

"Sadly, his cancer is so rare that it makes treating it that tad different from others. more genetic tests need to be done that are again not offered by NHS.

"Immunotherapy is one possible new treatment for cancer and is offered through some clinical trials or private. It works by encouraging the immune system to fight rather than chemotherapy helping the body kill itself.”

Niah took to the web and set up a JustGiving page in the hopes of raising £30,000 for Paul's treatment and to their surprise the page has accumulated more as much as £21,000 in the space of nine days.

Niah said: “The response we have had has been unbelievable in such a short space of time and overwhelming but lovely.

We always knew my husband would get a lot of support as he is a well-known face within our local area.”

“We are up against it but I will not lose my husband to this nasty thing."

Unfortunately, Paul’s condition in the liver has progressed and has now also spread to his bones.
