A cabinet minister has called for the Chancellor to reform the current stamp duty rates as it is stopping older homeowners from downsizing.
Pensioners are deterred from moving into smaller homes because of the stamp duty rates it attracts. For example a buyer would need to pay £20,000 on a £600,000 property.
The shortage of affordable homes for young people is one of the most pressing problems faced by the Conservatives.
