PLANS to build a new leisure centre in Chelmsford city centre have moved a step closer following an agreement between the council and developers.
The development is set to take place at the former gasworks site in Wharf Road, owned by the city council, to replace Riverside Ice and Leisure.
Developer Taylor Wimpey has produced a scheme for the site, known as Waterside, which will also see new homes being built, including about 100 affordable homes. Proposals are still subject to planning permission.
Council leader Roy Whitehead said: “This development would replace the Sixties buildings which are rapidly nearing the end of their lives, with leisure facilities to be provided at a very small additional cost to the city council.
“I am sure this will be welcomed by all of our residents.”
