The bowls competitive season got underway at Chelmsford Bowling Club with a preliminary Round National ‘Top Club’ match against Falcon BC at Tower Gardens.
The winners going forward to meet Romford BC who finished as runners-up in the National Final last season. This match was played across five disciplines with the winner of the most disciplines being declared the winner. The Two Bowl Singles played over 21 ends between Les Parris and Falcon’s Ian Muir resulted in a very close finish with Muir just winning 15 – 14. The Four Bowl singles had Chelmsford’s Graham Robson matched against Ian Barker with Falcon’s Barker having the better game to win 21 – 12. In the Pairs match Tony Skingley and Phil Kyffin were up against Brian O’Leary and Martin King who finished all square after the requisite 21 ends. An extra end produced the one shot necessary for Chelmsford to take this discipline. Chelmsford’s triple of Roger Jones, Terry Little and Fred Dowding had a close game against Falcon’s Alf Allen, Andrew Brown and Greg Moss with Moss taking the honours 17 – 13.
In the Fours Stan Slater skipped Chelmsford’s Eric Smith, Tony Collings and Bob Barnett to a very good victory against Falcon’s Colin Bridge, John Drewe, Ernie Brockman and skip Trevor Smith winning 23 – 14.
Falcon deservedly won the encounter by three matches to Chelmsford’s two.
