CHELMSFORD City’s impressive recent run was ended by automatic promotion hopefuls Havant & Waterlooville.

The Clarets had won five on the bounce heading into the clash with second placed Havant at Melbourne Park.

Rod Stringer’s men are now odds on to secure a play-off position and will be looking for a top three finish - which would see them enter the play-offs as the semi-final stage and secure a home draw.

Chelmsford, who played already relegated Bognor Regis Town on Tuesday night (visit website for match report), lined up against Havant determined to bolster their hopes of a home semi-final but they got off to the worst possible start.

Just four minutes had been played when Jason Prior finished well to put the visitors in front.

Back came Chelmsford and they were close to levelling when Scott Fenwick, who has been in breathtaking scoring form since joining the club, sent a volley just over the crossbar when well placed.

But there were few clear cut chances following the goal until shortly before the interval.

On 38 minutes, Sam Beasant made an impressive initial save to keep Havant at bay but Wes Fogden was on hand to double the advantage.

Chelmsford felt they should have been awarded a penalty with 20 minutes remaining after Fenwick appeared to be upended but the Clarets rarely threatened the away goal as the game petered out in the end.

Chelmsford City: Beasant, Barnum-Bobb, Braham-Barrett, Wallen, Spillane (Haines 53’), Omozusi, Giles (Batt 61’), Church, Fenwick, Dickson (Oyenuga 71’), Graham >Defender Mickey Spillane secured a clean sweep of awards at the club’s presentation evening.

Spillane won Players’ Player, Manager’s Player and Supporters’ Player of the Season and also scooped the Goal of the Season Award.
