CHELMSFORD diver Rebecca Gallantree and Team GB partner Alicia Blagg and were left frustrated after finishing sixth in the Olympic Games three metre synchro final.
The pair were in third after two rounds in Rio but did not manage the clean competition they needed and finished with a score of 292.83, 6.36 points adrift of Australia in bronze.
The event was dominated by China’s Wu Minxia and Shi Tingmao. Minxia, 30, became the first diver to win five Olympic gold medals and the oldest female champion in the sport.
Gallantree said: “We’re a little bit disappointed, it didn’t quite come together for us. It’s pretty frustrating to see we weren’t too far off the medals
“It would have been achievable for us if we’d just performed a little bit better but unfortunately that’s sport. It just wasn’t our day.”
And Chelmsford cyclist Ian Stannard played his part for Britain in the men’s road race but saw the team’s hopes of a medal end in the gutter as Greg van Avermaet of Belgium won gold on Saturday.
Stannard’s team-mate Geraint Thomas had been among a chase group with a chance of a medal at Copacabana, but tumbled to the road on the concluding descent with 10 kilometres to go of the 237.5km race.
He apparently slid into deep concrete drainage on the left side of the road, but picked himself up to finish 11th. He did not require hospital treatment.
