CHELMSFORD Cricket Club suffered a frustrating weekend as a result of the rain.

All away games were abandoned with only those at Chelmer Park surviving.

The first team travelled away to SNEL Premier Division league leaders Wanstead. On a pitch that was occasionally problematic they were 127-3 (Dan Hagen 50 not out) and reasonably placed when the rain came.

Despite hours of waiting around, the rain did not stop and the game was abandoned.

The second team ultimately enjoyed an easy win over Ilford although with rain a constant threat it was not a foregone conclusion until the second innings was 20 overs old.

Matt Thurston made 96 and Brad Green 84 not out in Chelmsford’s daunting 288 for four. Ilford lost regular wickets, finishing on 178 all out. Liam Keaney picked up three wickets and Stuart Everard two.

The third team had a bad day at home to an impressive Wanstead side. Tom Halsey and Sheraz Shahid were the only bowlers to exert much control, with some impressive striking towards the end of the Wanstead innings propelling them to 256 for seven.

Lots of starts but no major scores was the story of the Chelmsford response as Wanstead won by 46 runs.

The fourth team were caught up in a deluge at Buckhurst Hill, although with the opposition 173 for three from 27 overs this may have been a blessing. Anisur Rahman, Faisal Fayyez and Abraham Kurian had picked up the wickets.

Four wickets for 13-year-old debutant Dan Cornell and four for Matt Cole resulted in the fifth team bowl Hadleigh & Thundersley out for 131.

At 17 for two it was not certain that the target of 132 would be attained before rain made such considerations academic.

The Sunday friendly rather petered out into a fairly comfortable Chelmsford win.

In a game reduced to 35 overs a side, Ed Cole made 58 in Chelmsford’s total of 151 for five.

This should have been within the reach of Willow Herbs but the reply petered out, finishing on 106 for seven.

Luke Smith took three for 3, all three wickets being taken in the final over of the game.
