CHELMSFORD City were unable to overcome National League South leaders Ebbsfleet United as they crashed to a 3-1 defeat.

The Clarets made a fantastic start when ex-Fleet player Billy Bricknall gave the visitors the lead in the first minute.

Kevin Maher’s team were unable to find a second goal and lead 1-0 at half time.

But the league leaders got themselves back into the match in the 54th minute when Sean Shields equalised for Ebbsfleet.

And three minutes later Danny Kedwell scored to hand the Kent the lead for the first time in the match.

And Matt Godden wrapped up the scoring on the hour to keep Ebbsfleet three points clear of Sutton United and give them their first league win over Chelmsford at Stonebridge Road in 20 years.

The Clarets host Gosport Borough on Saturday, trailing their visitors by a place and four points.

Gosport played out a goalless draw with Bishop’s Stortford last Saturday.
