CHELMSFORD City head to Margate on Saturday with manager Mark Hawkes hoping his team can eradicate the errors that cost them against Weston-super-Mare.

Jacob Cane put Weston ahead in the 26th minute but Billy Hunt equalised for the Clarets in the 39th minute before Bagasan Graham put the hosts ahead two minutes later.

But Dayle Grubb struck twice in the second half to pull themselves three points clear of the drop zone with a 3-2 victory at the Melbourne Stadium.

Grubb equalised in the 48th minute from a free-kick and then netted his second goal on the hour to leave Chelmsford still looking for their first home win since September.

“We were dominant first half and played some of the best football we have all season,” said Hawkes.

“We were quick with the ball, sharp, we got numerous crosses into the box yet from their first attack we fell a goal behind.

“We recovered really well in the first half, kept going and got the two goals in the space of two or three minutes and that really should have been the hard part done.

“But you can’t go and have a dominant display in the first 45 minutes to what we produced in the second. “When we have a dominant spell for the first 20 minutes we have to score and relieve some pressure but we have conceded three goals and they haven’t had to work that hard to score them. The two goals we scored we’ve worked hard for but they haven't had to score good goals.

“We made individual errors again and that has put the whole team on the back foot. I thought we’d got rid of them over the last two, two and a half games, but they have returned in a very sloppy second half.”

Margate are a point and one place above 15th-placed Chelmsford in the National League South table ahead of Saturday’s match at Hartsdown Park.

The Gate head into the match boosted by the news that former Dagenham & Redbridge and Colchester United goalkeeper Chris Lewington will stay until the end of the season after impressing in the five matches he played for the Kent club.

Chelmsford head to Canvey Island tonight to take on Concord Rangers in the quarter-finals of the Essex Senior Cup.

  • The Clarets will be hoping to repeat their 5-2 win over the Beachboys when they met in National League South earlier this season.

But Adam Flanangan's team will be looking to make the semi-finals as they bid to win the Essex County FA competition for the third season on the trot.
