CHELMSFORD’S 34-0 home victory over Enfield Ignatians was their eighth win on the trot and kept them top of the London Two South East table.

With Diss winning at home, gaining their bonus point as well, it looks like a straight fight between Diss and Chelmsford as to who gets the automatic promotion spot.

The game on was far from straight forward and at half time with the score at only 3-0, having played down the slope, it left many Chelmsford supporters fearing for the worst.

But Chelmsford made a devastating second half performance, scoring five unanswered tries up the slope.

Playing down the slope in the first half, Chelmsford had the majority of possession and territory but poor handling, and indiscipline allowed Enfield to play to their forward strengths preventing Chelmsford from scoring, apart from a penalty scored by Sid Hoult after 20 minutes.

Enfield must have thought they had done the hard work up the slope and indeed they had shown great resolution without showing a great deal of a threat outside their scrum.

The second half started and it was obvious that there was a different mood in the camp, with the forwards giving a series of driving runs up the middle of the pitch.

The try which set the score rolling could have not have been foreseen. A long kick from the Enfield flyhalf was caught on the half way by Jamie Ash, who had the entire Enfield side in front of him, he started his run and by the time he had put the ball between the posts he had side stepped at least six opponents.

It was one of the best individual tries seen at Coronation Park for many years and Hoult converted.

The second try came after 20 minutes following sustained pressure from a lineout when Josh Cavey dived over for an unconverted try.

The third try came off the training ground with Hoult looping to make the extra man which released Miles Tett to score an excellent unconverted try in the corner.

Enfield were now beginning to tire and Chelmsford were now going flat out for the fourth try and the bonus point.

This was duly scored after 35 minutes when skipper Paul Redford popped up in the backs to feed Jack Acorn who rounded his man to score a converted try under the posts.

With seconds to go Cavey broke away from the loose to score the final try, which was converted.

Chelmsford travel to Saffron Walden on Saturday to play a rearranged fixture.
