SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown is contemplating calling striker Jason Williams back from his successful loan spell at Chelmsford City.

The 19-year-old forward has bagged six goals in seven games in the Conference South with the Clarets.

And that form could well lead to the youngster being recalled to Roots Hall.
“Jason is doing really well for Chelmsford and I’m thinking about calling him back from there if I’m honest,” confirmed Brown.

“We have a 24-hour call back option on him and it’s something I may well look to do with the amount of games we have coming up over Christmas.

“Jason will have benefitted hugely from going to Chelmsford. He’s scored goals so his confidence is high and the advantage with him is that he’s physically already a man as well.

“He’s very strong and we could definitely need him so that’s why I’m thinking about bringing him back in.”
Williams bagged two goals for Chelmsford on Saturday as they beat Eastbourne Borough 3-2 at Melbourne Park.

He opened the scoring but saw his goal cancelled out by Dean Sinclair.
Clarets skipper Mark Hughes put the hosts in front again but Nathan Pinney equalised for Eastbourne.

But Williams bagged the winner in stoppage time as City moved into  the play-off places for the first time this season.

Chelmsford head to Hayes & Yeading on Saturday before hosting Ebbsfleet on Boxing Day.

City are away to Staines on December 28 and play their return fixture at Ebbsfleet on New Year’s Day.

Southend play four games in the space of just 14 days during the busy festive period and remain keen to improve their goalscoring record.

The Shrimpers, who slipped to eighth in the League Two standings after losing 4-1 at leaders Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday, have netted just 22 times in their 20 league games so far this season.

Only five teams have scored fewer goals in the division and they are all in the bottom seven places.

As a result Williams, who came through the youth ranks with Blues, could well now be returning in a bid to improve that record.

The youngster has made two substitute appearances for the Shrimpers’ first team but has yet to score.
