THE Ridley League Darts Cup underdogs bared their teeth to produce a real against-the-odds final.
Fryerning Cricketers and Felsted Chequers will meet for the trophy on May 6 after “coupon-busting” wins over joint favourites Chelmsford City FC A and Broomfield King’s Arms, who had each lost only twice before this season.
Shane Kochan’s Cricketers took the honours by outplaying City, who never recovered from losing the first two singles.
It was a huge comedown for the league champions after their title-clinching win the previous week – achieved with 180s from Stefan Devenish and Martin Compton, and Rose Mallord’s 132 and 125 in the women’s pairs.
King’s Arms, missing Dave Kelly and Robbie Turner, still took their match to the wire. Skipper Trevor Suckling had a 174 and Richard Dow shot out from 96 – but the Chequers, with skipper Steve Hills a maximum man, put themselves in good heart for this week’s re-match in the Dominoes Cup.
