IT was a maximum point weekend for the Chieftains as they returned back to full strength, welcoming long term casualties Matt Turner and Michael Ranby back from injury.

On Saturday they travelled to the UK’s newest ice rink, where Streatham Redskins were blown away by an on form Chieftains side.

They were three up within the first four minutes and the Redskins had no answer to Chieftains fast flowing passing game of hockey.

The game ended 10-1 with Redskins preventing a shut-out just five minutes from the final buzzer.

Turner celebrated his comeback with two goals and Daniel Volrab also grabbed a brace. Chieftains’ other goals came from James Ayling, Darren Brown, Ross Brears, Gary Clarke, Tibor Schneider and John Connolly.

On Sunday Chieftains were looking for revenge for last week’s cup loss on the Isle of Wight as the Wightlink Raiders travelled to Riverside, this time with league points on offer.

It was Wightlink who got the go ahead goal at 7:01, but Chieftains looked for a quick reply and piled on the pressure.

And with just eight seconds remaining of the period Clarke was left in front of the Wightlink net unmarked. Once the puck found his stick, he composed himself and flicked the puck into the net.

It was 1-1 at the end of the first period, but it was the Raiders who came out stronger in the second period and Chieftains were in penalty trouble just after the half-hour mark.

With two extra players the Raiders surrounded the net, but with some excellent defensive work and a couple of smart saves from Ben Clements, the Raiders couldn’t find a way through.

Two minutes later the Chieftains were once again in front. Luke Brittle’s superb pass to Turner was finished in style and the home fans celebrated. The period ended 2-1 with everything still to play for in the final 20 minutes.

But as the puck dropped it was the Chieftains who took the game to their opponents. At 44:30 it was once again the Brittle and Turner combination doing the damage with the latter once again having the final touch.

With their visitors on the ropes the Chieftains struck the knockout punch just a minute later, Clarke finding the top shelf after a neat move that also involved Volrab and Brears.

The points looked in the bag and when Wightlink scored at 52:27 to narrow the gap, the Chieftains still looked in control.

With a minute left Matt Colclough, the Raider’s netminder, left the ice to give his side an empty net but the advantage of an extra forward to try and rescue at least a point.

But with Chieftains winning the face-off in their defensive zone the puck once again went to Clarke. He aimed and shot the puck the length of the ice straight between the posts.

And the game ended 5-2 with the home fans celebrating a maximum points weekend.
